Steve was
appointed NWAA Head Coach January 1st 2001. Prior to
arriving in Arkansas, Steve was the assistant swim coach at
Northern Arizona University, a Division I college program
located in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Prior to
that, he coached 10 years for club teams in Mesa, Arizona,
seeing great success with a number of Junior National, Senior
National as well as Olympic Trial qualifiers. Chandler Mesa
aquatics also won the Age Group State Championship meet in 1991
with Coach Duwel as the interim Head Coach. A number of his
athletes achieved state records as well as national recognition
as top 16.
Since his NWAA arrival, the number of swimmers has continued to
grow at a rapid pace going from about 60 to approx.
170 swimmers
(and growing) in 2006. NWAA has
gone from worst to first under Coach Steve with a state
championship for NWAA 2005 Long Course Season. Steve
currently is the Head Coach for the Bentonville High School Swim
Team where the girl’s team won the 2003, 2004,
2005 and 2006 team
titles and the boy’s team has won consecutive titles under Steve
in 2005 and 2006. He
was also named Arkansas High School Coach of the Year for 2005
and 2006, as well as 2004 Arkansas Swimming Inc. Coach of the
Year in 2004 and 2005.
Additionally, he acted as Head
Zone Coach for the Arkansas Zone team 3 out of his 5 years in
Arkansas and will be the Zone coach again in 2006.
Steve currently serves as the
coaches representative for Arkansas Swimming.
